AK-29 PARNELLI JONES INDY 1972, Mario Andretti

1972 PARNELLI JONES INDY, 1/32 scale resin kit to paint, consisting of body, rear wings, exhaust, roll bar, glass, pilot helmet, wheel inserts and decal sheet. DOES NOT CONTAIN CHASSIS OR AXLES.

At the end of 1971 Maurice Phillipie left Lotus, after having participated in the design of models such as the 49 and 72, and established himself as an independent designer.

Philippe’s 1972 design for Parnelli Jones featured wings that emerged at a 45-degree angle from the monocoque known as dihedral wings which also contained the radiators.

Most striking was that there was no rear wing mounted behind the Offenhauser turbo engine.

The VPJ team was the first of the modern teams with a line-up of top drivers, mechanics and strong sponsorship, so expectations were high for the new car.

The team featured drivers Joe Leonard, Al Unser, and Mario Andretti.

Leonard’s car was sponsored for the entire season by Samsonite luggage, while Andretti’s and Unser’s cars were fully sponsored by Viceroy cigarettes.

In the 1972 Indianapolis 500, the VPJ-1 finished second, third, and eighth. Later in the same 1972 USAC season, Joe Leonard won three consecutive races.

The livery shown is the one Mario Andretti drove in the 1972 500 Miles.
